My weekend started out with my interview with Larry Winget on our radio show.  Larry is known as the “pitbull of personal development”. I have to admit that I’m usually not a fan of in the face styles. But Larry’s direct comments like “we know what to do, we just don’t do it” or “if you want to lose weight then eat less and exercise more”.  Larry was also very clear that we must be be willing to work hard over a long period of time to achieve any worthwhile goals.  I revised my goals after spending time with Larry. I reviewed AGAIN what my purpose was in this life and asked myself was I making a difference.  OK, Larry it worked!

My Father’s Day was spent working with my children doing a lot of hard, manual labor.  And I loved it!  Obviously working with my children always makes me feel we are accomplishing something together. But on this specific day I realized or I was reminded of the importance of purpose and significance.  That is, Father’s Day was an opportunity for me to live out my mission to have a clear purpose for my life and to do all I can to bring meaning or significance for all those around me. The day was not what people could do for me, but rather how we could contribute to each other’s lives.

Focus on making a difference.  You’ll feel better and you will leave a legacy.

Yet, I am interviewing Larry Winget today for my radio show and Larry is a little rough on the “success gurus”. Larry is all about action.  Stop whining and get to work.  I also agree with him.

Maybe successful business person and author Weldon Long says it best, “Your thoughts drive your emotions. Your emotions drive your actions.  Your actions drive results.”  I agree with him too.

Succeeding is hard work. If you don’t have reasons to stay on your game, we might call that motivation, then you won’t go to work and make it happen.

I suggest we stop worrying about which author is “right”. Learn, act, watch for results and repeat.  Like all the authors say, it’s simple but not easy!

From my friend and colleage Dale Nat we learned about the importance of diligent and consistent follow up;  Dale mentioned:

1. Closing the loops. What he was referring to was to be sure we finish what we start.  That means as individuals and as organizations.  Do we have a process so projects are monitored and completed?
2. Stay in touch.  When you start a dialog with a client, be sure you do not leave anything unsaid or undone. Remind them of the discussion you had and any plans you may have shared with them. Check your notes regularly.
3. Get back to people EARLY.  This is another way of saying underpromise and overdeliver.  Dale mentioned that his environmental consulting business, has thrived on how he has contacted or followed up with prospects or clients BEFORE they expected it. This is a way of being distinctive and memorable.

From my professional speaker friend Rob Waldo Waldman who called in from Atlanta we learned about the difference of being a “Commander vs.a “Demander”.  Waldo was a decorated fighter pilot and he talked about how in the military there are commanders at every level. And they deserved to be a commander.  They had earned respect, they lead their teams, they expected excellence.  In some organizations we have “Demanders” those people who may have a title and demand results from their teams.  If they do not have the respect of their team they can demand all they want, they will never get the results that is expected. To be a true leader you to be a commander not a demander.

Finally, I learned from all the call ins and text messages we received during the show that I am blessed to have friends and colleagues who care enough about me and the message the Business Builders Show delivers, to be willing to contribute to our audience or entrepreneurs. small business owners and professionals who seek excellence.

On this Memorial Day I am grateful for all who served our country honorably so that I am now able to serve others in my life quest of helping others succeed.

One of the things Dr. Grant discusses is something called “The Reciprocity Ring”. This exercise was developed by University of Michigan sociologist Wayne Baker abd his wife Cheryl.

Whenever I hear the word reciprocity, I think of Dr.Robert Cialdini.  Dr. Cialdini’s research basically states that when we do something good for someone else we can and should expect something good in return, even if it takes 50 years!  Dr. Cialdini is one of the leading, if not the leading teacher on the topic of “Influence”.  Worth learning about about his work.

“The Reciprocity Ring” offers a different viewpoint.  In the book Dr. Grant gives several examples that when we give without expecting something in return (he talks about us being Givers, Takers or Matchers) we are often surprised at the results. Briefly what the “Ring” is about is that a group of students, managers, executives, team members, any group, decide that they will 1) Make requests for what they need and/or want and 2) The team will respond without expecting anything in return.

Does “Giving” work in a corporate or business setting? The reserach in “Give and Take” suggests it does.
